Hellmann’s helps you reduce food waste

Did you know, we throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year in the UK, and more than half of this is food and drink we could have eaten? It’s not only bad for the environment; it’s bad for our pockets too! Wasting food costs the average family with children £680, the equivalent of around £50 a month.

At Hellmann’s, we love food and we believe eating should be a moment of joy. That’s why we hate food waste and encourage you to use your leftovers with our delicious recipes and sandwiches.

Hellman’s has joined forces with our friends at Love Food Hate Waste to help you to reduce your food waste and save money! Here are our top tips!

Know your dates
Use-by dates are for safety, you can freeze certain food right up to their use-by date but you shouldn’t eat it after that date.

Make it last longer
Did you know most fresh fruit and veg will last up to two weeks longer if kept in the fridge in their original pack ?

Portions and planning
There are two main reasons why we waste food, for one our eyes are too big for our stomachs! We buy too much and we don’t get round to eating it, or we cook or serve too much! It’s notoriously tricky to plan when you’ve got fussy eaters to contend with! A couple of easy ways to get around this problem are to plan meals ahead and make a shopping list. It’s also a good idea to check the fridge, freezer and cupboards before you go shopping to avoid buying food you already have!
